Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay was on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. Her aunt was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of a jury member's home. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
